Reorganized in 1937, when was renamed University of Brazil, carries on the same denomination since 1965. Its implementation does not follow, however, an organic discussion and maturation process, which would result in the organization of an entity equal to the legitimate demands of the Brazilian society. It is simply a political and protocol act of juxtaposition of already existent higher education institutions: the Medicine School, the Polytechnic School and the Law School, this latter already resultant from the merger of two other free previously existent schools. This addiction of origin defines the later trajectory of the University, leading to the establishment of a bureaucratic and notary culture, which deeply infects its existence and which, after more than eight decades, still constitutes an obstacle to a truly Republican development.
The Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) has the mission of produce, systematize and socialize the philosophic, scientific, artistic and technological knowledge, broadening and deepening the human being construction to professional practice, the critical thinking, the national and international solidarity, under the perspective of building a fair and democratic society and protecting the quality of life.
